Salvation Mountain

Narrated by John Waters, this documentary “Plagues and Pleasures of the Salton Sea” tells the boom-and-bust story of Southern California’s Salton Sea, an “engineering screw-up” caused by accidental flooding in 1905, existing now as a environmentally unstable lake in a delicate state of limbo between potential redevelopment and oblivion.

Filmmakers Chris Metzler and Jeff Springer focus on the eccentric locals, including Leonard Knight, creator of Salvation Mountain, to create a folksy portrait of upbeat survival in a decaying place.
