Our friend, Steve, is a great guy who has a thing about collecting unusual treasures to surround him in his home. The collection is incredible, astonishing, visually overwhelming, and sometimes disarming in nature. We’ve posted several times in the past about Steve’s passion for finding items which are unique, yet compliment other items in his multi-layered mix of visual spectacle. Today’s post is a video filmed by Unusual Life’s Marlow Harris. To say his home is a museum of wondrous treasures is an understatement. Marlow’s new video captures of the true essence of Steve’s incredibly strange home. Enjoy!

The Love Love was built to look as if it is sinking

Happy Valentine’s Day!
Today’s post is about a boat named ‘Love Love‘

French artist Julien Berthier has designed a fully functional boat to look
as if it is sinking. The 21ft yacht was cut in half with a new keel
and motor added so it remains in the sinking position while being fully
functional. He describes it as “the permanent and mobile image of a
wrecked ship that has become a functional and safe leisure object.”

Berthier has taken the boat (or should I say half-a-boat) across the
English Channel to London and has toured it around Europe , getting plenty
of offers of assistance from unwitting good Samaritans, who would
presumably be either very annoyed or rather bemused by the contraption.

The designer and artist designed and built the floating installation in
2007. He named his creation Love Love.

Meet at Noon, at the Kiddy Pool at the North end of Greenlake in Seattle on Friday, January 1st, 2011!

Here are photos from the last few years. We’ll do it again this year, Saturday, January 1st, rain-or-shine. See you then!

What a great way to get the New Year off on the right foot.

Luckily, wigs do offer some insulation from hangovers and there’s no need to fret about bad bed-head.

Rain-or-shine, umbrella’s & kids ok. Meet at the Kiddy Pool on the North end of the Lake at noon. I’m pretty sure we’ll all be pretty easy to spot.

Art Car Blow Out

Oh My God! was the first Art Car created by artist and filmmaker Harrod Blank. At the age of 16, Blank became embarrassed by the blandness of his all-white Volkswagen and painted a rooster on the driver’s door. He never stopped decorating the car, which ultimately served as the springboard to his career in building Art Cars and documenting the Art Car movement.

Unusual Life is based here in Seattle, and we’re excited because Harrod Blank is bringing “Oh My God!” all the way from the Art Car World Museum in Douglas AZ to Seattle for the Art Car Blow Out. The film “Automorphosis” will play Thursday June 17th at the Northwest Film Forum in Seattle at 7 and 9 pm where “Oh My God!” and other art cars will be parked outside. Then he will attend the Seattle Art Car Blow Out from the 18th -20th at the Fremont Fair and the film will show again on the 21st at the Central Cinema at 7 pm. The filmmaker and other art car artists will be in attendance.

So if you live anywhere near Seattle, please stop by. Unusual Life will be in the Mighty Mighty Elvismobile, so stop by and say Hello!

Atlas Obscura, the website compendium of strange and unusual places, is hosting a worldwide tour day on Saturday, March 20th.

Fans of Atlas Obscura are planning weird and unusual tours into places rarely seen by the public and you can view the website to see if your town is listed for this great day celebrating Unusual Life!

World’s Largest LED project

Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, just became home to the world’s largest LED project.

The Yas Hotel looks like something out of a science fiction movie or, in the words of the hotel, “a giant fishing net tossed over the sea.” The eye-catching hotel is wrapped in 5,000 LED lights that can change colors and even display video. It’s certainly eye-catching, and likely to attract a huge number of visitors. Many guests are unlikely to have stayed anywhere like this, and it is sure to offer a truly unique experience. Even a stay at a theme park hotel (www.britanniahotels.com/special-offers/alton-towers), with accommodation overlooking the bright lights of the rides, isn’t quite the same as actually staying inside a magnificent building like hotel. That said, the LED project is far from the only reason to stay in this stunning accommodation. The hotel has several restaurants, a spa, two rooftop swimming pools and access to an 18-hole golf course on Yas Island.
